Choosing the right podcast length can be challenging. Some shows run for a couple of minutes, while others run for an hour or more.

Unfortunately, there’s no exact science to determine the perfect podcast length. However, in this article, we’ve come up with the best pointers and tips to help you narrow down the ideal podcast duration.

Read on to find out what these are.

What is the average length of a podcast?

Based on two studies, the average length of a podcast is anywhere between 30 minutes to 42 minutes long.

In 2018, Dan Mineser published the first study from Pacific Content. He found that the average podcast time is 41 minutes and 31 seconds long.

We published our own research recently. It found that 55% of podcasts are over 30 minutes long. Here are some more stats:

  • 13.6% of podcasts are less than 15 minutes long

  • 31.3% of podcasts are between 15–30 minutes long

  • 32.1% of podcasts are between 30-45 minutes long

  • 18.4% of podcasts are between 45–60 minutes long

  • 4.6% of podcasts are over 60 minutes long

However, statistics are not what you should focus on when determining the average podcast length for your show. Sometimes shorter podcasts perform better, and sometimes longer ones do. Read More

Community Hot Take

So you’ve decided to create a podcast. Now you’re probably thinking a lot about scripts and microphones. And while podcasts are primarily an audio medium, they do require one essential visual element: cover art.

This little square image may be tiny, but its significance in representing your podcast is huge, so it’s worth putting in some extra time and effort to get it right. While you don’t have to be a graphic designer to create effective cover art, it can help to think like one. That means analyzing your podcast’s essence (subject matter, tone, target audience, and differentiators) before you even get started with the design process. Once you’re ready to put pen to paper (or, more likely, mouse to Adobe Spark), it’s time to get nerdy about things like fonts, colors, and white space.

There’s a lot to think about, but we’re here to guide you through creating your own podcast cover art. Read More

It’s often stated that podcast listeners are loyal. And with good reason. Most keep coming back week in, week out to hear more from their favourite creators. But what is it that makes someone feel so invested in one particular show? Why are they willing to give it a regular slot in their busy weekly schedule?

Yes, of course the quality of the content matters. That’s a given. But there’s another dynamic at work here: the power of community.

Our favourite shows become our favourite because they make us feel connected to a larger group of like-minded people. We implicitly enter into an invisible, international community of listeners who also consider this show one of their favourites. We share a common set of interests, we laugh at the same jokes, and we’re in it for the long-haul. We let the host take us on a collective journey for an extended period of time - often over several years. Read More
