Spotify Brings AI to Podcast Playlists
Podcast discovery is shifting from search-based to prompt-based and that could fundamentally change how listeners find and choose your show.

Spotify is expanding its AI-powered playlist feature beyond music—and into podcasts—making it easier for listeners to discover your show without traditional search.
Users can now type natural language prompts like “true crime about cold cases” or “interviews with startup founders,” and Spotify will generate a custom podcast playlist instantly. This is a big shift in how discovery works. Instead of relying on categories, charts, or keyword searches, listeners can now describe what they want and let AI do the matching.
For podcasters, this matters because discovery has long been one of the biggest challenges in a space with millions of podcasts competing for attention. Spotify is clearly betting that AI can solve that problem by making content more accessible, more personalized, and easier to find in the moment. It also puts Spotify ahead in the race with platforms like Apple Podcasts and YouTube, as AI-driven curation becomes a bigger part of how people choose what to listen to.
What this means for you
Your content is no longer just discovered by title or category. Instead, it is being matched based on themes, topics, and intent. The way you describe your episodes (titles, show notes, keywords) may matter more than ever. Podcast discovery is shifting from search-based to prompt-based and that could fundamentally change how listeners find and choose your podcast.

The “War of Independents” is Heating Up
A new perspective from Forbes highlights a growing tension in podcasting: independent creators vs. large networks and they aren’t just coexisting; they’re competing more directly than ever.
While big networks bring scale, celebrity talent, and advertiser relationships, independent podcasters are proving they can build loyal audiences, move faster, and often outperform expectations without the same resources. In many cases, the lines are blurring and indie podcasters are becoming more professional, while networks are trying to stay nimble and authentic.
The reality? Podcasting is no longer just “indie vs. corporate”. It’s becoming a battle for attention, trust, and influence, with both sides needing each other more than they may realize (or admit.)
What’s Behind It?
Independent creators are gaining power through niche audiences and authenticity
Networks still dominate in scale, distribution, and ad dollars
The industry is maturing, forcing everyone to compete more directly for listeners and revenue
Underlying Questions
There’s an unspoken (sometimes hidden) alliance among the two with networks needing “indie energy” and innovation, while independents benefit from the infrastructure and visibility of larger players… but both are ultimately competing for the same audience and dollars
What are your thoughts?
Is this…
A healthy evolution where independents and networks push each other to get better?
ORThe start of a more defined divide where only the most resourced or most niche survive?
Final Thoughts
Podcasting is entering its “know your numbers—and your position” era… and that could change how everyone plays the game.
