The Riches are in the Niches

Podcasting has evolved into one of the most dynamic and engaging mediums for both content creators and advertisers alike. While mainstream shows like The Joe Rogan Experience and Call Her Daddy continue to dominate the airwaves, there’s a powerful shift happening in the podcasting ecosystem: the rise and dominance of niche podcasts. Shows under this umbrella, which cater to more specific, often highly passionate audiences, are not to be ignored. For podcast ad sellers, understanding the value and growing appeal of niche programming is essential.

Despite their specialized focus, niche podcasts reach a surprisingly diverse audience that overlaps with the broader, more mainstream listener base. This overlap has significant implications for advertisers looking to connect with highly engaged listeners in a more meaningful and cost-effective way. Read More

The world has lost a superhero in the passing of Niel Guilarte! He helped so many in the world of filmmaking, podcasting, and video production. Niel was a man of faith who loved his family and adored his friends. On the morning of Monday, Feb 24th, Niel was out and about when he fell to the ground and never got back up.

My last conversation with Niel was about postponing a shoot we were gonna do this past Monday because my father was in the hospital being treated for pneumonia. He told me, "Spend as much time with your father and tell him you love him because you never know when it will be the last time." Little did I know that would be the last time I would talk to Niel. First, it still surprises me how many creators, publishers and brands would rather read tea leaves than go to the source. Whether it’s an advertiser trying to gauge brand awareness by checking site visits or a podcaster obsessing about download numbers and Apple Podcasts ratings, I see so many doing everything to measure their success but surveying their audience. I’m not saying that stats like web landings and downloads aren’t important – what I am saying is that they don’t tell you what a listener or customer thinks about your show or brand.

Second, I find there is often a narrow view of surveys, that they’re only good for one or two things — like the annoying “how did we do today” survey you get every time you set foot in your neighborhood drug store. In fact, surveys are a powerful tool for understanding audience and consumer sentiment, with the opportunity to dig deeply into why and how real people engage with your content or brand – and for measuring the return on your investment. Read More

This sketch from SNL is a hilarious take on how guys aged 20-45 will do just about anything to avoid going to the doctor. The bit reimagines a checkup as a podcast—because apparently, men are more likely to take medical advice from a couple of dudes with microphones than an actual doctor. In this sketch, One Medical makes the whole experience feel like a chill, bro-friendly conversation, complete with fitness talk, drinking stories, and even a few conspiracy theories to keep things interesting. Check it out

If you want to get on more podcasts to sell books, grow your brand, or yap into a microphone, here are some tricks that may be useful.

Most of this will not work. Pitching yourself (or a guest) is laborious and will mostly be met with crickets. If you get a response 5-to-10 percent of the time, consider that successful. You are better off spending time upfront. Customize your pitch to specific podcasts, versus spraying and praying a generic request to dozens of email addresses.

1) Come with a story or bring something to the table. If you are in a crowded field, anything generic probably won’t cut it. Thousands of financial advisors can discuss budgeting tips around the holidays or how to save in an IRA. This kind of pitch falls in the bucket of "Local Person Presents Framework for Thinking About Things." Read More
