What If Podcast Awards Gave You Feedback Instead of Just a Trophy?

A conversation among indie podcasters is proposing a different approach to podcast awards—one built around peer feedback, discovery and community participation.

Podcast awards can provide creators with recognition, credibility and exposure. But for independent podcasters, entering them can also mean paying submission fees without knowing whether they'll receive anything meaningful in return.

An interesting community conversation is asking:

What if the price of entering an indie podcast award wasn't money, but your time?

In a recent discussion among independent podcasters, one creator proposed a peer-review podcast awards model. Instead of paying an entry fee, participating podcasters would listen to and review several other submitted shows. In return, their own podcast would be reviewed by fellow creators.

The idea is still a community proposal, not an established awards program but it has sparked an interesting conversation about what recognition in independent podcasting could look like.

What This Means for Indie Podcasters

The concept turns the traditional awards model into something that could potentially benefit creators even if they don't win.

Participants could walk away with:

  • Constructive feedback on their podcast

  • New shows and creators to discover

  • Exposure to other podcasters

  • Opportunities for connection and collaboration

  • A better understanding of what works in other shows

  • Recognition determined in part by fellow creators

And perhaps that's the most interesting part.

Instead of an awards program where a handful of creators win and everyone else goes home, a peer-review model asks whether participation itself could provide value.

Podcasting has always had a strong DIY and community-driven spirit. Ideas like this demonstrate that indie creators aren't just thinking about how to make better podcasts—they're also thinking about how to build better systems for supporting one another.

Whether this particular idea ultimately becomes something bigger remains to be seen.

But the conversation itself is worth paying attention to.

What would podcast recognition look like if community, not competition were at the center of it?

Does Every Podcast Need to Become a Business?

As podcasting becomes more professionalized, creators are being given more ways to grow and monetize than ever before. But is building a business the goal for every podcaster or have we started defining success too narrowly?

Spend enough time in podcasting spaces and you'll hear a familiar list of advice:

Grow your downloads. Build your email list. Monetize your audience. Create video. Find sponsors. Develop products. Build your personal brand. Turn listeners into customers.

None of that is necessarily bad advice.

Podcasters deserve opportunities to be paid for their work, and for creators who want to build businesses around their shows, there have never been more tools, strategies, and revenue opportunities available.

But there's another group of podcasters who can sometimes get lost in that conversation:

People who simply love making podcasts.

The hobbyists. The storytellers. The niche creators. The friends who started a show because they couldn't stop talking about something. The person with 200 listeners who knows half of them by name.

Which raises an interesting question:

When did growing a podcast become synonymous with turning it into a business?

What's Behind It?

Podcasting has matured tremendously. What was once largely a DIY medium now exists alongside major media networks, celebrity shows, sophisticated advertising operations, creator businesses, professional production companies, and an entire ecosystem of tools designed to help creators grow.

At the same time, much of the education surrounding podcasting has naturally shifted toward measurable outcomes: downloads, subscribers, revenue, conversions, rankings and reach. For creators hoping to make podcasting their career, that's valuable.

But success can look very different depending on why someone picked up the microphone in the first place.

A show with 250 deeply engaged listeners isn't necessarily failing.

A creator who doesn't want sponsors isn't necessarily leaving money on the table.

A podcast that never becomes someone's full-time job can still create friendships, open doors, document stories, teach something valuable or simply bring its creator joy.

Underlying Questions

Maybe the bigger conversation isn't whether podcasters should monetize. It's whether monetization has quietly become the expectation. If your podcast isn't growing every month, does that mean something is wrong? If you don't want to turn your listeners into customers, are you missing an opportunity? If your goal is simply to make something meaningful and connect with people who care about the same things you do, is that enough?

And on the other side...

There's nothing inherently wrong with wanting more. Independent creators invest real time, money, energy and expertise into their shows. Why shouldn't they want to earn income from that work? Maybe professionalization isn't taking something away from podcasting. Maybe it's finally giving independent creators permission to take their work seriously.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Is this...

A positive evolution that gives independent podcasters more opportunities to turn something they love into sustainable work?

OR

Have we become so focused on growth and monetization that we're losing some of the experimentation, creativity and pure fun that made indie podcasting special in the first place?

And maybe there's a third option:

Can we build an industry where both definitions of success are equally celebrated?

Final Thoughts

Not every podcast needs the same destination.

For one creator, success might mean replacing their salary. For another, it's landing 10,000 downloads. For someone else, it might be receiving an email from one listener saying, "I thought I was the only person who felt this way."

Growth is valuable. Revenue is valuable. Reach is valuable. But so are connection, creativity, curiosity and joy.

Maybe the question isn't "How big can I make this?"

Maybe every podcaster gets to decide:

"What would make this worth continuing?"
